Nathan Ellis Early Cricket Career

Nathan Ellis began his professional cricket journey through Australia’s domestic system. His performances eventually earned him opportunities with Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes, where he started developing his skills in white-ball cricket.

In September 2018, Ellis was named in the Hobart Hurricanes squad for the 2018 Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy. His inclusion gave him an opportunity to gain experience in T20 cricket outside Australia’s regular domestic competitions.

Ellis made his Twenty20 debut for the Hobart Hurricanes on 5 October 2018 during the Abu Dhabi T20 Trophy. This was an important early step in his career as he continued to establish himself as a professional fast bowler.

Nathan Ellis

His progress was not limited to T20 cricket. On 23 September 2019, Ellis made his List A debut for Tasmania in the 2019–20 Marsh One-Day Cup. This gave him valuable experience in 50-over cricket and helped him develop his game across different formats.

First-Class Debut for Tasmania

Nathan Ellis continued his development by moving into first-class cricket. On 24 February 2020, he made his first-class debut for Tasmania during the 2019–20 Sheffield Shield season.

Playing first-class cricket was another important stage of his development. It allowed Ellis to gain experience with longer spells and different bowling conditions while competing against some of Australia’s leading domestic players.

Although T20 cricket would later become one of the most important parts of his career, his experience in Tasmania’s first-class and List A teams helped him build a broader cricketing foundation.

Nathan Ellis Gets Australia Opportunity

Ellis’ performances in domestic cricket eventually brought him into Australia’s international setup.

In June 2021, he was initially named as a travelling reserve for Australia’s T20I series against Bangladesh. However, his situation changed before the tour when he was moved into Australia’s full squad as cover for Riley Meredith.

The opportunity eventually resulted in Ellis receiving his first international cap.

Historic T20I Debut and Hat-Trick

Nathan Ellis made his T20I debut for Australia against Bangladesh on 6 August 2021. Instead of having a quiet introduction to international cricket, Ellis produced one of the most memorable debut performances by an Australian fast bowler.

He took a hat-trick during his debut T20I, becoming the first cricketer to achieve the feat on debut in a men’s T20I.

A hat-trick is one of the most difficult achievements for a bowler in cricket. It requires a bowler to dismiss three batters with three consecutive deliveries. Doing that in an international match is a major achievement, but achieving it in a debut match made Ellis’ performance particularly significant.

His record-breaking performance immediately placed his name in T20I history.

Ellis also became only the third Australian cricketer to take a hat-trick in a men’s T20 International, following Brett Lee and Ashton Agar.

The performance against Bangladesh became a defining moment in Ellis’ career and helped establish him as an exciting fast-bowling option for Australia in the shortest format.

Nathan Ellis and the 2021 T20 World Cup

Later in August 2021, Ellis received another important opportunity with the Australian national team.

He was named as one of three players selected as injury cover in Australia’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Although his initial international opportunity had come through a replacement role, his performances had demonstrated that he could compete at the highest level. His selection as injury cover showed the growing confidence in his ability to contribute to Australia’s T20 setup.

Nathan Ellis Makes IPL Debut Journey with Punjab Kings

Nathan Ellis’ career took another major step in February 2022, when he was bought by the Punjab Kings at the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League season.

The IPL provided Ellis with the opportunity to play alongside and against some of the biggest names in world cricket. It also gave him exposure to high-pressure franchise cricket and different playing conditions in India.

Ellis was subsequently retained by Punjab Kings for the 2023 and 2024 IPL seasons.

The 2023 campaign became particularly notable for the Australian fast bowler. He played 10 matches and took 13 wickets, making a valuable contribution to the Punjab Kings bowling attack.

His best IPL figures came against the Rajasthan Royals, when he returned figures of 4 wickets for 30 runs. The match was also notable because it was the inaugural IPL fixture played at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati.

His four-wicket performance demonstrated his ability to make an impact during important stages of a T20 match.
